I was at Rolling Thunder Games back in the early 1990s (programmed Victory) and this blog entry exactly summed up my experiences.

15 years out of the industry and I can play a game again without analyzing it (too much).

It is great to see you doing well in life and contributing to both education and games again.

It looks like this blog isn't active any more, but that's fine. I just wanted to say thanks for putting this post out on the web.

TerryAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7234808138909108734.post-59999474010496855472010-08-08T06:24:27.448-07:002010-08-08T06:24:27.448-07:00Well, welcome back to the blogging world! :) mWell, welcome back to the blogging world! :) mMaria H. Lots, if not most of the MMORPGs there are free of monthly payments or any kind of payments at all (other than extras store). Do you know much about that industry?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7234808138909108734.post-24158097919694136742009-05-15T22:06:00.000-07:002009-05-15T22:06:00.000-07:00Hey Jim,

This is a total shift. I know that the PS4 may be coming out of development soon, but honestly, I think it will be OnLives first victim. It should be interesting to see how MS responds, and Nintendo... hhmmm The Wii has put a solid punch into the console market. I wonder if their next version will use OnLives system method with current Wii controller tech.
As for PC/Mac... mac problem has always been the limited software selection. This will change that. PC and thus Windows is finally going to get some competition in the general market.
The next 5 years are going to be fun to watch.
And by the by... I'm back in school and I'll be rubber stamped a full on game designer in 2 year. This is going to be fun. :DAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7234808138909108734.post-9194920680729497512009-04-22T08:29:00.000-07:002009-04-22T08:29:00.000-07:00My chief complaint about gaming is already adresse...My chief complaint about gaming is already adressed on this page- I buy the commercial game, play through it, when the game is done, I'm bored with it.

Games like M&B are better, chiefly because of the modding community. If only the Native game were available, I'd still play it once in awhile, but not regularly, as I do M&B with all the varied mods.

I began gaming in 1995 with Knights of Honor, Crusader Kings, the whole series of Age of Empires, Rise of Nations, chiefly to have something to do while spending what seemed an eternity in foreign airport lounges. Now, I only play indie games, like Mount and Blade and The Witcher, because they offer many different ways to play the game via character background in M&B and via decisions made in The Witcher.
I got bored with Baldur's Gate, etc.

I hate MMORPG games, and won't play them. You just level up and up, until finally there is no place to go, then put in the add-on and there is just more of the same. Also, a lot of the online players seem like complete arses to me, because I am an old bat with very little tolerance for teenaged stupidity and discourtesy.

I may make an exception with the M&B online game, but only as an experiment with existing friends from the TW Forum. I likely won't do it very much.

I want to totally immerse myself in another world, preferably one not overloaded with elves and magic, Witcher excepted. I want lots of strategy, not point, click, fire spell or whack with sword, kills. I also want the option of playing as a female, as it is hard to get immersed in a male character unless you are one.

The Pendor mod actually fulfills many of my requirements and has no magic potions or spells, thank God.
It adds a much more interesting layer to M&B.

Keep it up, Jim.

Cheers, MasonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7234808138909108734.post-9618005660851899902009-01-17T13:08:00.000-08:002009-01-17T13:08:00.000-08:00I've been on vacation for three weeks away from th...I've been on vacation for three weeks away from the interwebs. After acquiring provisions, unpacking, and doing laundry, one of the first things I did was work to get my gaming fix again. I was impressed by the quality of the backstory to Pendor on the mbrepository forums. After one paragraph, I started downloading. Your comments about poor game design in the industry remind me of Steffen Gerlach's design comments about C-evo, an attempt to raise the gameplay of Civ II to the quality and indefinite replayability of classic boardgame status.

I also appreciate your thoughts about media convergence -- and not in the same vein as professional game designers mean when they insert lots of non-interactivity and railroading imitating film to introduce plot! This approach is so wrong; as early movies matured did they introduce scads of exposition and narration to make them more like good novels? Of course not: they played on film's strengths (a panoramic camera sweep with appropriate facial expressions and background sound is worth a lot more than a thousand words...).

Ah, download finished. Looking forward to Pendor. Don't expect me to check back here anytime soon!Doji Starhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15288375201385718902noreply@blogger.com
